Normally I might not link to my work on other sites here, but in this case I think it’s warranted.
Those of you who follow me on twitter or the like are probably aware that I’ve spent the last two weeks with my head so far up Civ V’s arse that I probably wouldn’t have noticed if an asteroid were about to hit us and Morgan Freeman had become the US President.
Unlike a ‘normal’ review we decided that Civ V really needed the fine-toothed-comb treatment. So, the epic (3200 word) in-depth review was done in a rather different format – it’s got a sort of panel-show back-and-forth style between myself and Joab Gilroy as we discuss every aspect of Civ V we can.
The review is up now at GameArena. Check it out!
Oh, and for those who read my article about the cartoony style of strategy games intruding where it’s not wanted? Not an issue with Civ V. Hell, the leaders even talk in their native language, with subtitles down the bottom. Colour me very, very pleased.

Now if someone can justify why, in addition to being charged 60% more for a digital copy of this game (80USD vs 50USD in North America), we’re still not allowed to play it? It’s been out in North America for more than a day – we’ve still got over 24 hours to go before it unlocks here.
Ridiculous. Did Australia run over someone at 2K Games’ dog?
It’s not. There’s no justification. And you should never play any game that costs over $10.50 (the precise amount gameplay is worth) ever again.
Personally i’m as disgusted as Jeremy. The idea that someone can work out how to use the internet to buy Digitally Distributed games but still hasn’t worked out that there are different DD stores available – stores that aren’t Steam – is abhorrent to me. Why do people continue to allow themselves to be treated this way? Do they just like to have something to complain about?
Sorry, Civ V is available digitally other than through Steam? And there’s no non-NA embargo on it? And they charge the same as the US/UK price?
If you know where to look.
Don’t see how, since it’s a Steam game. Anyway, due to the “if you don’t pre-order WE’LL LOCK CONTENT AWAY” I preordered it on Steam (via a cousin in the UK, obviously – I’m not paying 60% more for nothing), which means I’m stuck waiting. Of course, Steam didn’t point out that it was going to be arbitrarily holding the game back later than the rest of the world.
Another three hours! Screw you, 2K.
Way to fight the power Jeremy. Just keep up with the impotent rage while you continue to give them money for something you’re unhappy about! You’re a crafty consumer!
I might have caved on this one, but I’ll be less likely to buy from them in future. I got around the ripoff price, but didn’t realise that they were then also going to hold out on us. 2K is now in the Activision pile of “wait till it’s in a massive sale or pass on it completely”.
Ahh why I play games on consoles, even a RTS requires me to get a new Video Card
Sorry Turn Based game even…not RTS
i thought it was good but multiplayer was lacking far for me and the fact that it kept crashing for me
Jeremy,
I ordered it from the ozgameshop.com for $39.99.
Took a few days to get to Melb from the UK but well worth the saving over rip off EB prices.
Played it for a bit, and I have to admit that it is a damn good refresh.
The combat is more-or-less copied off of the old classic Battle Isle which I have no problem with as that game had great combat.
The tactics of lining your army up properly without getting flanked and having the weaker ranged units massacred is pure Battle Isle, and has made the game worth playing again.
The move from square to hex makes for larger and much more interesting cities especially as roads now cost maintenance and only speed units up – civs now look organic instead of clones of each other where every city tile ends up with a road.
I don’t miss religion or cottages at all to be honest.
Only issue is it has a stupid memory leak and slowly gets slower and slower before finally carking it after consuming 2.5Gb of memory.
I reckon its going to be nigh impossible to finish the map (Large size) with this leak.
